KEITH DAVID HARRIS

Keith David Harris grew up in Sydney, but has lived in Europe since 1979. His international reputation as a performer and teacher was already well established when a chronic illness put a stop to his playing career a mere decade later. It hasn’t prevented his worldwide conducting and teaching activities however. He also engages actively in the discourse about music in general and naturally about the mandolin in particular. His book ‘The Mandolin Game’ (Trekel, Hamburg) divides readers into enthusiastic converts (the majority, he says) and hostile skeptics (just a few diehards, he maintains).

The first three years in Europe were as an International Fellow of the Australia Council. This was an adventurous time, during which he made debuts in London’s Wigmore and Tokyo’s ABC Hall, recorded for the labels Hyperion and Plucked String and began regular tours to the USA as well as many European countries. In 1986 he became state music director for the German plucked string organisation in the state of Hesse, in which capacity he planned and oversaw educational projects and conducted both the state plucked string orchestra and its youth orchestra counterpart, making numerous CDs and leading the ensembles on tour as far away as Australia, Canada and the USA. For most of the 90s he held a teaching commission at the music university of Heidelberg. He has directed the Austrian Cecilia Ensemble since the early 80s.

He works a lot at the interface between amateur and professional music, things like conducting the European Plucked String Youth Orchestra (EGMYO) in Greece in 2003, holding master classes like those in Japan in 2010, directing the State Zither Orchestra of Baden-Wuerttemberg at the German Selective Orchestra Competition in Bamberg, also in 2010 – they won first place, of course! – or acting as judge for the prestigious Calace International Competition 2011 in Italy.

In recent years he has become fascinated by the communication possibilities of the Internet, and increasingly supplements his travels with teaching students from Glasgow to Brisbane and Vienna to Portland (Oregon) – by video from his desk in Marburg (Germany).

Music he writes for the mandolin, solo or in ensemble, is meant first and foremost simply to give pleasure to both listeners and players. Harris hopes that possible didactic aspects are hidden well enough that they don’t cloud the musical intentions.

Among lots of other activity last year, Keith Harris was awarded the Silver Medal of the German Plucked String Federation (BDZ, the leading organisation of its kind in the world), for 'Services to Plucked String Music' and also accepted an invitation from the Classical Mandolin Society of America (CMSA) to be 'Composer in Residence' at the Society's Convention in Portland, Oregon, where his 'Diamantina Suite' was performed with great success.
