'THE DARKIE'S JUBILEE'

By F. Cecil Folkestone

This piece seems to have been written by an accomplished banjoist who used a pseudonym to hide his identity.   Attributed to ‘F. Cecil Folkestone’, it is possible that his name was actually ‘Francis Cecil’, but whatever it was, he wrote nearly thirty solos, most of them published by John Alvey Turner.
This piece begins with a slow Introduction in G major, and is followed by two lively sections in the same key before modulating into C major for a simple bass-note and chord melody for sixteen bars.
The same melody is then repeated using what used to be called ‘rolling playing’, and that leads into two more sections in the same key before repeating the ‘rolling playing’ again.  Finally, the first  G major section appears again to complete the piece.   There are two places in the slow Introduction where the second banjo part fills-in under a minim chord and these notes have been shown so that they can be played if required.  The mp3 example provides three excerpts from what is actually quite a long solo.
