Several of the pieces in this album were written specifically for Banjo Examinations in different Grades, but as far as I am aware, they have never been used.   So, rather than waste them, I have gathered them together with some other original pieces, written over the years, to provide a source of short solos ranging in difficulty from very easy to the moderately demanding.
The intention is to present banjoists with a variety of pieces which can be used for improving technique, and they should be played carefully, with attention given to the position of the hands and fingers, while listening closely to the sounds produced.   The objective should be as musical a rendition as possible, particularly with the slower pieces such as the Barcarolle, Tristesse, and Meditation.
Some of the pieces have unusual right-hand fingering, and this is generally to avoid picking the same string twice with the same finger, which helps to make a smoother flow of a series of notes.  Anyone beyond the ‘beginner’ stage should learn to use almost any finger on any string except the fifth, but the rule should be: try the composer’s fingering first, and if that doesn’t suit you, experiment, but don’t change the music.
Sight-reading is a sadly neglected accomplishment among amateur banjoists, but it is very rewarding once acquired, and these pieces can used for the purpose, provided they are not played too often.
I apologise for some of the titles, which are reminiscent of exercises in childrens’ piano tutors, but I found myself spending more time trying to think of suitable names than it took to write the tunes.  The numbers in the headings refer to the tracks on the CD.
Finally, I must admit that I have not always followed my own dynamics while recording the CD: — my excuse is that having played with, and listened to many other banjoists during the last seventy years, experience has shown me that very few of us play the same piece in the same way every time.  But however you decide to play the pieces, I hope you will enjoy them, and benefit from the experience.
